Slovenia - Piran

Olive trees Harbour entry in Piran

We just showed our Swiss ID cards to the customer officers. "Only two passengers?" – "Yes." And already we were in Slovenia. A member of the former Yugoslav Republic until 1992 the country joined the EU in 2004.

As we drove along the coast we appreciate the beautiful olive trees. Maybe it's just us, but the landscape already seemed to be different from what we've seen in nearby Italy, maybe a bit wilder and more provincial.

Our first stop was in Piran, a charming costal village located only about 20 km from the Italian border. Like many nice places, Piran has its share of tourists. Most of them seem to be wealthy Slovenians, some are Italians and a few Germans.

As we took a stroll through the narrow streets, looking for a place to eat some fish, we noticed that the locals seem to disapprove us being here: rather closed faces, rarely a smile, and sometimes they mumble something like "… tourists …" in our back. Without success we tried to order in two restaurants: the waiter simply ignored us until we finally gave up and walked away. Nevertheless, we finally managed to find a very friendly and nice place to eat.

I hope it was just a coincidence(*), and I'm looking forward to discovering a friendlier Slovenia when we get to Ljubljana.

[(*) Update: Judging by their fancy cars and Yachts, Piran seems to be a holiday resort for the nouveaux riches – and these folks tend to be arrogant in every country. We discovered a much friendlier Slovenia in Ljubljana!]
